Zodiac Cartouche Jewelry
Zodiac Pendant in Cartouche form
Cartouche is an ellipsoid enclosure containing a throne name or the birth name of a pharaoh. Its modern name was given by Napoleonic soldiers who thought it resembled their gun cartridges. It was used to mark an object so that it is known as something belonging to a pharaoh. Especially, considering Egyptian idea of the afterlife - when a deceased would have his belongings and household objects with him in the afterlife - it was important that the tomb was clearly marked. These hieroglyphic names have made life for archaeologists easier by providing a quick reference to who is occupying a certain tomb.

Each pharaoh had two shapes - one containing his prenomen or throne name and another one enclosing his nomen or birth name. In most cases cartouches can be found in burials and tombs but sometimes amulets were inscribed with them. Maybe one of the reasons why cartouche jewelry is so popular today is down to the fact that cartouches could be only used the royals. Until the 12th dynasty only the pharaoh had the right to use a cartouche. Then the wife-consorts and later all other lesser queens started having their names inscribed. On some occasions royal children would have one too.

Today the popularity of cartouche jewelry is on a rise. Because of its simple shape it looks great with different styles - casual, modern, sophisticated or glamour. The mysticism of ancient Egypt is still capturing the minds of people. These items are available in different types and sizes; many people find that golden and silver products are too expensive with prices ranging from £20 to several hundreds of pounds. That’s why it is possible to obtain pewter or gilt Egyptian cartouche jewelry at really attractive prices - even below £10. At Tutankhamun’s Shop we offer two items of different design and finishing.
